“The Drug King” is packed with fascinating concepts and issues, but it often fails to put them into a format that draws viewers. The film lacks thorough and realistic storytelling and suffers from poor pace. Some scenes are too long, and the characters don’t seem convincing. “The Drug King” is still a fun film with many well-developed characters.
Directed by David Fincher, the film “The Drug Kings” follows the character in the title when he becomes the regional leader of a doo-sam empire. While working for Doo-Sam the shrewd and ambitious Sam realizes the negative effects of drug use on his family, his girlfriend, and even himself. In order to protect his family, Sam starts to run an underground railroad, which will bring him many funny and colorful characters along the way.
With the exception of one brief moment when Sam glides off to the side towards the end, the film follows Sam’s adventures mostly from the point of view of his girlfriend, Holly. Sam finds himself in love with her immediately and spends the majority of the movie trying convince Holly to quit Doo-Sam to join the Doo-Sam Empire. Although she does eventually leave however, she returns in the final part of the movie as a loyal Doo-Sam agent. Through the film, she repeatedly pleads with Sam for more access to and the right information about the doo-sam industry. Eventually, she agrees to assist him in finding marijuana shipments that are controlled by Korea and are being held by the Yakuza.
The film’s uniqueness comes from the way the characters interact with one another. The relationships between the characters are often portrayed with hilarious humor. The music is excellent. The majority of the songs, particularly those that feature Korean lyrics, address themes of love, tragedy, freedom and marijuana. Many songs focus on Doo SAM the drug kingpin. Kang-ho’s song Kang-ho is allowed to spit rhymes at Kim Tae Hee.
Min-sik (a minor character) escapes from the drug factory in a sequence that is less funny. Yomi is shocked to learn that he was guilty , and he apologizes. Yomi tells Min-sik not to return to the factory again and Min-sik decides that he will leave the factory. When he finally leaves the factory, Min-sik is greeted by numerous Yomi employees waiting outside. ดูหนัง hd When the time comes for him to arrive, Yomi asks him where he learned to be such a good friend.
The humor in this film is more about the comical aspects of the story than it being about Korean history or the Korean drug trade. Funny misunderstandings are shared between the two Korean characters throughout the movie. Min-sik attempts to escape with Yomi to avoid having to work there however, Yomi’s best friend decides to help him out by getting the drug information out to the world. They also have many conflicts. Other minor characters also have hilarious conflicts with the main characters, such as the Chinese girl who wants to give Lee Doo SAM a sample of her blood so that he can make an elixir with a special ingredient that will render him inert to narcotics.
This film is definitely not for those looking for deep history lessons. It’s an spoof comedy that is hilarious and has many enjoyable moments, like the transformation of the “drug lord” into a gorgeous blonde woman. The movie also has some nice songs, most notably the one that is played when Yomi injects Lee Doo-Ssan the blue vein. The film is also an excellent example of the talent of Oh Sung-gi who is a south Korean actor. The music is typically instrumental. This is a film every film lover should see.
The Drug King is a great film that highlights the unique culture of its locale. The acting and story are both excellent. The film also has music that is a great addition. There are some funny moments and the overall mood of the film is enjoyable. Although The Drug King didn’t live up to expectations, it’s an entertaining and thought-provoking Korean drama that should be seen by everyone.
